The Splimm Team is growing! We are elated to welcome as our Visual Director, New York artist Sierra Rivers Hollister.
Sierra studied printmaking and animation at Bennington College, from which she graduated in 2015, and draws inspiration from such artists as Enrique Chagoya, William Kentridge, Frieda Kahlo, and Hieronymous Bosch. Her mixed media work incorporates woodcuts, lithography, and monotyping to create heavily layered prints, animations, books, and installations. She is a gallery attendant at the International Print Center in New York.
Chad and I met Sierra in 2012; her mom and I were teaching together in Baltimore and her brother and our daughter were classmates and great friends. Immediately impressed with both her artistic vision and her general vibe, we could tell this young woman was going to bring some unique and wonderful things into the world. And we wanted the opportunity to collaborate with her.
We’d been throwing ideas around for months about creative possibilities, and, when we decided to bring on an illustrator for Splimm, Sierra was the first person who came to mind. It was a good sign that she didn’t think our idea was absolutely crazy and an even better one that she felt a connection to the project. She’s also a fellow Sagittarius and Twin Peaks fan, so it’s clearly a good fit.
You can see Sierra’s first cartoon illustration for Splimm in Issue #3, which will hit your inboxes tomorrow morning. We were blown away by what she came up with when given a one-word theme and a 48-hour deadline. We’re pretty sure you will be too…
In the meantime, check out Sierra’s work and show her some love!
