Even grownups like getting new toys, right? And, for those adults who appreciate cannabis, some of our most sought-after playthings are accessories for our favorite plant. When I was younger this meant that I saved my paychecks and fawned over intricately designed hand blown glass pipes on headshop shelves. Now that I’m a parent, I just don’t smoke as often as I once did, for health reasons and because I find other ingestion methods more convenient and enjoyable. So most of the toys I covet these days are chic or decorative storage or gadgets, and I’ve been on a quest to find an ideal vaporizer.
I like classy things, and I especially like classy cannabis things.
Enter the Firefly 2, a most desirable tool for vaporizing cannabis flower and extracts. Like those dichroic glass pieces I ogled in my 20s, as soon as I used this device I started pinching pennies so I could buy one for myself.
Unboxing the Firefly 2
The folks at Firefly know that a relationship with a product begins with its box. They enhanced this unit’s shelf appeal with a focus on attractive packaging, bold use of color, and strong imagery. The unboxing process feels like that of a Mac product – and it’s no surprise that members of the Firefly team spent time at Apple – with clean lines, simple design, clearly labeled components, and lots of white.
The Firefly 2, with only the unit itself initially visible, beckons you to “Enjoy your flight” as soon as you open the box.
When you remove the top cover, you’ll discover inside all the accessory boxes including charging dock, USB cable, concentrate pads, cleaning kit, and an extra rechargeable battery.
Like a new MacBook Pro, the Firefly 2 is as lovely as its packaging. It’s small, lightweight, and super attractive. From the metallic shine to the firefly design logo, this apparatus really is eye catching and comes in two shades of black, along with blue, red, gold, and white.
One of my favorite things about the Firefly 2 is that you can see the material you’re vaping as you use it. Made from high quality metal and glass, it separates into two pieces so you can fill the bowl. It’s easy to pack this way, and the pieces snap back together magnetically.
Not only is it the only vaporizer I’ve tried that is held like a pipe (which I love), but it’s also, in my opinion, the best looking on the market.
A unique mechanism called “dynamic convection” heats your cannabis in the Firefly 2. The vapor path is made completely of borosilicate glass, so you don’t have to worry about activating any nasty chemicals on the way, and the removable mouthpiece contains a particulate filter in case any plant matter escapes its container.
The Firefly is as intuitive is it beautiful. There are no buttons to press, no three clicks to turn it on, no confusing flashing lights. You simply put flower or concentrate into the oven, replace the lid, and hold the vaporizer in your hand as you would a pipe. At the point where your index finger and thumb touch the unit there are two sensor pads. When your fingers touch both, the Firefly will activate. When you pull on the mouthpiece, it will begin to heat and vaporize what’s in the oven.
It heats incredibly quickly from room temperature to 400 degrees, in about three seconds, allowing for a smooth big hit right away. And it only heats when you’re inhaling on it, which prevents you from wasting cannabis while you’re taking a break. The hits are smooth and full, and the taste is impeccable. With both flower and concentrate, your mouth and nose are filled with a pure, rich flavor, full of yummy terpenes.
The device reaches temperatures up to 420 degrees for plant matter (400 is the default setting) and up to 500 degrees for concentrates. You can use the optional free app to adjust the temperature. Be sure not to try to vape flower on the concentrate setting, or you’ll end up combusting it.
The dock charger is another terrific feature, charging the unit quickly (in about 45 minutes) and conveniently connects to any cell phone or tablet charger. The Firefly 2 includes an extra battery, meaning you don’t ever have to wait to vape.
A few tips: When using flower it’s best to pull apart buds instead of grinding. This also makes the vaporizer easier to clean. For concentrates, first place a metal pad in the oven. The concentrate pads will build up the oil or wax you put on them. This is awesome for getting that extra hit sometimes, but it’s also a good idea to change these when you notice that they’ve become too saturated.
Great for parents
Parents will love the Firefly 2. It’s discreet and cool looking, while also being convenient and easy-to-use. We love the intuitive design and high quality components. The Firefly is effective for microdosing, and it’s perfect for a pre-workout or yoga session or for taking on a hike.
And, since we parents spend at least half our lives buying, fixing, picking up, or saying no to junk for our kids, don’t we deserve a new toy every now and then?
