For years, East Fork Cultivars has put a spotlight on high-CBD cannabis. Now their CBD Certified education program is giving this important cannabinoid the platform it deserves.
The more we learn about it, the more we understand that CBD has remarkable value. But have we figured out how best to unlock its potential? And who can we look to for sound, accurate, scientifically valid information?
East Fork Cultivars, a sun-grown cannabis farm in Southern Oregon, has been developing a deep relationship with CBD for years. They’ve made it their mission to expand access to high-quality CBD products, and now they’re offering high-quality CBD education with their new program, CBD Certified.
East Fork Cultivars & High-CBD Cannabis
Founded by brothers Nathan and Aaron Howard, East Fork has focused on growing, researching, and increasing the genetic diversity of CBD cultivars since 2015. The Howards launched this endeavor to provide relief in the form of medical cannabis for their oldest brother, who lived with a nervous system disorder. They started breeding in Oregon’s medical program and soon discovered high-CBD strains.
Working as caregivers, the Howards witnessed firsthand the powerful healing properties of CBD. They also noticed the increasingly large demand for high-CBD cannabis, as more and more people shared stories of transformation resulting from their use of CBD. When Measure 91 passed in Oregon, making adult use cannabis legal, the East Fork team knew they had an opportunity to bring their products to an even wider audience. Now their high-CBD flower is the key ingredient in chocolate bars, tinctures, and topicals, along with their signature prerolls.
“CBD is our mission. The industry became obsessed with THC during prohibition and the balance fell away, along with a wide variety of effects. We work to restore that balance,” says Anna Symonds, East Fork’s Education & Partnership Manager.
Cannabidiol Education with CBD Certified
Because they’re so passionate about the potential of cannabidiol, East Fork Cultivars has developed a thorough, relevant, and well-researched educational program called CBD Certified. They aim to equip front-line professionals, typically dispensary budtenders, with the most up-to-date, scientific research about CBD. These folks are in position to have the largest impact because they interface with consumers daily and can be a trusted source of important information.
“We promote CBD because it has the power to improve people’s lives. We definitely appreciate and value THC, but it has gotten a lot of attention already. With CBD Certified, we’re giving CBD a megaphone. We can spread this message in scientifically-based way. We can say: here’s the research,” Symonds tells us.
This is not traditional budtender training, though, which is designed to teach how to sell a product. “While that’s important,” East Fork CEO Mason Walker emphasizes, “we wanted to make sure ours is distinctly different. We’re incorporating peer reviewed research, talking with health care professionals. CBD Certified is a conduit for other experts, not a sales presentation.”
CBD Certified is a free program, offered to dispensaries and other cannabis businesses throughout Oregon. The team has done more than 20 presentations so far and have many more on the schedule. Always values-driven, East Fork hopes that its products and programs will push social change in Oregon and beyond.
The Future of CBD
What does the future hold for CBD? Currently, most commercially available CBD products are made from industrial hemp. These hemp-based products have the advantage of being legal across the nation, but their cannabinoid and terpene profiles are not as complex as those of high-CBD cannabis. That’s because industrial hemp is just that – meant for industrial purposes and not necessarily for consumption.
East Fork Cultivars, though, is pioneering the field of “craft hemp” production. “We can actually produce ‘craft hemp’ – with the exact same genetics, the same plant varieties, under the same regulatory scheme,” explains Symonds. “It would have the rich and vibrant profiles and the high resin that we’re looking for in our cannabis, and it would be used to create superior CBD products. We’re very committed to quality, and we know we can bring those standards to hemp production.”
We’ll be sure to let you know when East Fork Cultivars launches their line of hemp-based CBD products nationwide. In the meantime, support CBD Certified dispensaries in Oregon and learn all you can from the well-informed budtenders at those establishments!
