Food CBD-Enhanced Smoothie for the Breakfast Win This is my favorite way to start the day (besides coffee of course!): a nutritious, delicious, CBD-enhanced green smoothie that makes me feel like I can do it all! I try to pack a lot into my mornings. There’s something about the time before the day actually begins – before the kid wakes up, before I have to leave for work – that feels sacred and ripe with possibility. These are the quietest hours I’ll have, and it’s important to make them count. Embrace the morning routine While I really want to resist routine – I am a Sagittarius after all – I’ve discovered that I operate at my fullest capacity when some things are just dialed in. When I know that I’m going to shower, then put some water on to boil, then meditate, then make coffee, then write my morning pages. Rather than having to decide to do all those things instead of other things (i.e. scrolling through the news), or having to convince myself to do those things (because even if I don’t want to now, I’ll be glad I did later), they’re simply the norm, the routine, the things I do every morning. Find what works The same is true of my breakfast. When I would wake up without a sense of what I was going to eat in the morning, I often didn’t. I’d subsist on coffee until I got to work and then scrounge around for a snack to hold me over until lunch. But recently, my digestive system went totally out of whack and I was forced to revamp my food habits. At first I was at a complete loss. I struggled to identify foods that made me feel good, because almost everything made me feel awful. I wasn’t sure if I’d ever figure out what worked, and it was hard to even enjoy meals because decoding food was such an arduous effort. Smoothies for the breakfast win After months of supplements and elimination diets, researching acronyms like GAPS and AIP, and seeking out new food blogs and cookbooks so help me navigate this new terrain, I finally have a strong foundation to build from. And it all begins with my breakfast smoothie. I have the basically same thing each morning, with slight variations thrown in for fun. This keeps me sane, and it keeps me eating. Because I’ve discovered that CBD has enormous benefit to me, I’ve started incorporating that into my smoothies too. There are lots of ways to do this: you can infuse your own butter, oil, or nut butter; squeeze some tincture in with your other liquids; or even try a powdered CBD drink mix. Here’s the recipe I use. This combination of ingredients works well for me – I want to avoid too much sugar and I need the good fat – but you might tweak it for your own purposes. It’s also not exact (I use measurements like “small handful” because it’s 7:00 on a winter morning and I’m still waking up, okay?). But I promise it’s yummy, filling, and super energizing. Add some protein powder to give it a boost if that’s your thing. Or boil a couple of eggs and you’re all set. Breakfast, conquered!
